The first step in exiting your lukewarm era is to make a heartfelt recommitment to God. This means turning away from past behaviors that don’t align with His will and fully embracing His way. Remember, no matter what you’ve done in the past, God welcomes you back with open arms, just like the father in the parable of the prodigal son.
Cultivate a Hatred for Sin
To truly grow in your faith, it’s important to develop a strong aversion to sin. This doesn’t mean being judgmental or self-righteous, but rather recognizing the destructive nature of sin and actively choosing to avoid it. As Romans 6:1-2 reminds us, we shouldn’t continue sinning just because grace is available. Instead, strive for holiness because God is holy.
Guard Your Heart and Mind
Avoid Temptation
Identify your personal triggers and actively stay away from situations that lead you to sin. As the saying goes, ‘Don’t even make friends with your temptations.’ Opening the door just a little can lead to falling back into old habits.
Be Mindful of Worldly Influences
Pay attention to the media you consume and the company you keep. Some TV shows, music, or even lukewarm friends can subtly pull you away from a Christ-centered life. Be intentional about what you watch, listen to, and who you spend time with.
Seek Community and Abide in Christ
Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Believers
Get involved in a community of passionate believers who will encourage your growth and hold you accountable. This could be through your church, a Bible study group, or faith-based organizations. Iron sharpens iron, and surrounding yourself with others on fire for Jesus can help reignite your own passion.
Abide in Christ Daily
Make a conscious effort to integrate God into every aspect of your life. This means:
- Reading your Bible daily
- Maintaining continual prayer
- Obeying His word
- Acknowledging His presence throughout your day
Treat your relationship with God like you would a best friend – talk to Him often, seek His guidance, and include Him in all aspects of your life.
By implementing these practices, you’ll find yourself moving from lukewarm to on fire for Jesus. Remember, growing closer to God is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, stay committed, and watch as your faith transforms from a flicker to a flame!
